Hurdle making day course

Learn from two very experienced tutors how to make Hurdles – traditional woven fences made from woven rods of coppiced hazel or willow.

Description:The aim of the course is to teach you the teqniques to make your own hurdles.

• Approximately the first hour of the course will be a demonstration by Erik of how to start the weave on a full sized ‘mole board’ (jig) incorporating double and single twists.

• This course will show how a hurdle is constructed and the techniques used.

• It will explain what materials are used and their properties.

• You will learn how to split, twist and weave the wood.

• Have a brief overview of the history of the hurdle and its uses.

• Duration of the course will six hours including one hour for lunch.

You will be able to take home your practice work that will be a small version of a hurdle

Instructors:

• Erik Phipps has been a hurdle maker for the twenty-five years and has completed in that time many commissions. He has done a lot of creative bespoke work from gates to archways.

• Graham Hardy is current chairperson of the Isle of Wight Coppice Group and has made hurdles over the last 5 years or so. Graham has focused on pole-lathe turning and general green woodworking for over 25 years and owns his own woodland.

Requirements: For this course you will need :-

• Old clothes

• Gloves

Refreshments and lunch are provided

Choose the residential option and stay in one of our on site Tiny Home eco cabins.

You are welcome to bring a guest with you who is not attending the workshop if you buy the accomodation package for one.

All participants of the above course will take responsibility for their own safety

and behaviour.

They must follow instructions of the course facilitator on

matters of safe working practice.

The instructor will demonstrate the correct

methods of how to use each tool and what it is used for.

The instructor will explain safe handling of tools and their storage when not in use.

Any instructions that are disregarded, disruptive behaviour or dangerous

working practices the instructor will ask the course participant to leave, the

facilitator decision is final.

No drinking of alcohol will be permitted during the

course or at the designated lunch time break.

The instructor will not take any

responsibility for any injury caused by incorrect or misuse of any tools or

materials.
